On the penultimate day of the Expo, the Netherlands pavilion was granted with the BIE Official Participant Award for Best Architecture & Landscape. It also received the UAE Innovates Award for Sustainability. This brings the total number of awards won to 10.

At the award ceremony held at the Expo site in Dubai, as part of the celebrations of BIE (Bureau International des Expositions) day, Carel Richter, Commissioner General and Niels Bouwman, pavilion director, were presented with the awards.

The Netherlands pavilions architecture was rewarded with the Gold Award for Architecture & Landscape in the category medium size pavilions of the Official Participant Awards. It was renowned for showing the relevance of architecture by showcasing vital themes such as circularity and potential solutions for water, energy and food issues in a way that is both technical as well as aesthetic, and above all also creates an inspiring environment.

For the UAE Innovates Award, the pavilion received the Best Sustainable Innovation Award for its exceptional circular concept by uniting water, energy and food through the vertical farm. Its concept, technical innovations and the holistic approach to the circular concept were perceived to be very impactful.

Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) was created in 1928 and started its activity in 1931. Its mission is to guarantee the quality of Expos and protect the rights of their organisers and participants. From showcases of industrial innovation, world expos have become global discussion platforms aimed at finding solutions to the biggest challenges of humanity. Since 1994, Expos have made sustainable development their main objective. Over 50 Expos have been organised under the auspices of the BIE. Today, 170 countries are members of the BIE.

The UAE Innovates Awards, an initiative first launched in February 2021 to celebrate innovative ideas in the UAE, dedicates awards to the Expo 2020 Dubai pavilions that have showcased impressive innovations with regards to Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability.
